Original iPod 3rd Gen - New battery won't charge

I have the original 3rd Gen iPod (click wheel, not Touch) and just installed a new battery. It fires up and works great. But I cannot get the battery to charge using the original 12 pin charging cable into the usb wall charger. Any ideas?
